Job Summary:

The Engineer-Utilities & HVAC role supports Lonza operations by ensuring that plant systems, equipment and facilities are designed and operating to meet the requirements for biopharmaceutical manufacturing. Support project planning, development and execution of projects that vary in size and scope with an emphasis on operation and optimization of Utilities and HVAC systems or modifications to existing equipment and facilities. System oversight and project initiative can include:

  • Life cycle and process improvement supporting reliable manufacturing operations.

  • System design and functional operations

  • Plant condition, capacity and configuration

  • Technical transfer of new customer processes into existing facility

  • Compliance and regulatory monitoring and support

  • Environmental, Health, and Safety initiatives

  • Replacements for obsolete equipment

  • Energy efficiency and sustainability projects

Key Responsibilities:

  • Apply engineering principles and experience to support ownership of primary Utilities and HVAC systems for plant operations

  • Support Utilities & HVAC Dept team in management of systems and response priorities.

  • Collaborate across cross functional engineering and site departments to support requirements and reliable operations

  • Develop technical knowledge on Utilities and HVAC equipment and processes.

  • Support resolution of major equipment breakdowns and quality issues in the suites.

  • Provide support to Utilities and other departments for the design and operation of Utilities and HVAC equipment

  • Conduct troubleshooting and technical analysis on Utilities and HVAC equipment and processes including PI data analyses, system capacity analyses, MOC analyses, flow path analyses, etc.

  • Support change request management

  • Participates in audits and inspections as engineering representative

  • Scopes and prioritizes capital project (lump sum and CAR) involving complex equipment changes and process improvements including the following activities

  • Coordinate, write and communicate detailed scope of work documents to project stakeholders

  • Support requirements creation and design reviews

  • Support development of project scoping and cost estimates, which includes communication with contractors/vendors for project scope and price development

  • Support business case for capital funding for projects through lump sum, ESR, and CAR requests

  • Coordinate procurement of equipment and services required including bid analysis activities for significant purchases

  • Support FAT activities for project team as needed

  • Manage and coordinate engineering contractors to meet project and operational requirements

  • Support cross functional project team meetings to inform stakeholders of progress and to drive Utilities Ops activities

  • Support change requests and complete change request tasks to support project completion

  • Support management and development of Engineering standards and SOPs

  • Provide guidance and instruction to technical departments in alignment with department priorities and planning

  • Performs all work safely and meets the requisite training requirements

  • Perform other duties as assigned

Key Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in applicable Engineering discipline or related field (Mechanical, Electrical or Chemical) is required

  • 0-4 years in an engineering environment

  • Lean Sigma Six training and certification is preferred

  • PMP Certification and Pharma/Biotech experience is preferred

  • AutoCAD software experience is preferred, which will include P&ID management and documentation control

  • Experience in the technical analysis of operational and design issues within an industrial or manufacturing environment, preferably pharmaceutical

  • Ability to evaluate and or develop engineering design criteria at a system level while providing technical operational guidance of these systems

  • Familiar with GMP Standard Operating Procedures (GMP) and compliance procedures

  • Familiarity with Building Automation Systems and utility/HVAC systems operations

  • Ability to think critically and logically

  • SAP experience

  • Understanding of EHS safety procedures and policies

  • Strong communication skills. Ability to work with other collaborating teams.

  • The ability to learn to read complex MEP/HVAC drawings

  • Strong written and oral communication skills

  • Support coordination and direction of technical execution teams

  • Collaborate and provide guidance to professional engineering consultants

  • Solid internal and external collaboration and influencing skills and the ability to lead diverse, cross-functional teams in the successful delivery of projects

  • Can conform to shifting priorities, demands and timelines through analytical and problem-solving capabilities

  • Ability to effectively prioritize and execute tasks in a fast-paced environment is crucial

  • Ability to read communication styles of team members and contractors who come from a broad spectrum of disciplines

  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite with focus on Outlook, Word, and Excel

  • Persuasive, encouraging, and motivating to the team

  • Strong written and oral communication skills
